Transduction is the process by which genetic material (DNA) is transferred from one bacterium to another through the mediation of a virus (specifically a bacteriophage). During the viral replication cycle, fragments of the host bacterium's DNA may be accidentally packaged into new viral particles. When these viruses infect a subsequent bacterium, they inject the previous host's DNA into the new cell, potentially incorporating it into the new recipient's genome.
